The five levels of PHP understanding in Thesis

October 13, 2009

phpAs I see it, these are the five levels of understanding of PHP as it relates to Thesis 1, the WordPress theme framework in which this site is presently soaking.

Level One: Your grasp of the principles of PHP is nil. Functions written in PHP appear as patterns floating in alphabet soup, or perhaps cryptic messages in a foreign language. The effects of a PHP function might as well be magic.

Level Two: Your awareness of the principles of PHP is weak. You understand just enough to recognize when a function might create the effect you desire. You copy such functions when you can find them fully written and explained, paste them into your custom_functions.php, and pray.

Level Three: Your understanding of the principles of PHP is moderate. You recognize when provided functions will create the effect you desire, and you have just enough knowledge of the working of PHP to tailor functions to your situation.

Level Four: Your PHP-fu is strong. You are able to write functions from scratch and apply them to your needs.

Level Five: Your understanding of PHP is so complete that you need not even write the functions, relying instead on pure psychic concentration to bend your site’s code to your purpose without even touching the keyboard. The effect of your will on PHP functions might as well be magic.

I am approaching Level Three, I think. On faltering feet, perhaps, but I’m getting there.

Your site is cool! Simple, beautiful, elegant and witty... someday my site will get there! Hopefully before my PHP-fu because that's not going anywhere soon ;)

I am happily a level one, and have every intention of staying there g

So where can we buy the poster? :-)

At your nearest color printer, I think! The image has no real attribution, though the site hosting it has a Creative Commons notice at the bottom of the page (for 'original content'). As Kramer once said, it's a land rush. :-)

I am approaching level 2! Thanks for the smile this morning.

You're welcome! They say once you've reached Level Two, the sky's the limit. ;-)
