Gateway to the stars

There’s still enough in me of the child who thrilled to the late Apollo missions to get all geeky-excited over artist’s renditions like this:

Let’s build a spaceport like this here in St. Louis! We don’t have direct flights to most major American cities any more, but we can fly direct to the Moon! Who’s with me?

STL Spaceport is cool, but if you read "It's only rocket science : an introduction in plain English" you will realize there is a reason for s-ports being on the East coasts of continents... launch failures raining down-range on Illinois, Indiana & points East-- bring it!

Bah! You Americans are soft! The Soviets flung their rockets skyward from landlocked Star City. Their heroic cosmonauts returned not to a soft, bourgeois Pacific "splashdown," but to the firm embrace of frozen soil...

Okay, so there was probably more vacant acreage in the former USSR that in St. Louis proper. But possibly not by much. ;-)
