A sign of what, I wonder

March 28, 2010

Foraging for groceries yesterday, I spied this monitor and accompanying sign as I entered a particular aisle. (Apologies for the size and quality of the image, which was captured on my buggy-whip equivalent of a wireless.)

CC monitor in grocery store

Sign says:

WARNING: This area is subject to closed circuit TV recording and random monitoring

You might guess that the monitored aisle was dedicated to certain over-the counter cold and allergy medications, popular with the meth set and so often subject to shoplifting. You might guess that; you’d be wrong.

Baby formula in monitored aisle

Actually, this aisle is where you find baby formula.

Make of this what you will.

Note: Wow. Apparently, the need to monitor baby formula is neither local nor new.

I had to buy formula for one of my many grandchildren last Christmas and had to go to Food Lion (literally only had this one option). The formula was behind the counter with the cigarettes. Once it was rung up, I understood why.

Pricey!

Astonishing prices! Never having raised an infant - and, more to the point, not having done so lately - I had no idea of the cost of formula these days. Yikes.

Wow; who knew? Seems like getting something for nothing is worth risking your childrens' safety. What happens to those kids now?

I feel as though I should have known of this before, but it’s totally new to me. Weird.
